How to build an MVP for a startup without wasting your budget

2026-09-18

An MVP is not a cheap version of the final product

A minimum viable product is often misunderstood as "the cheapest possible app".

That is not the goal.

An MVP should be the smallest product capable of testing an important assumption.

If people will only understand the value after ten features are built, you may not have found the right MVP yet.

Start with the riskiest assumption

Ask what you actually need to prove.

Is it:

Your MVP should test that assumption.

Example: a shared planning app

Imagine you are creating an app for groups of friends.

The core hypothesis may be that people want a shared calendar where plans and expenses live together.

The first version does not necessarily need advanced profiles, dozens of themes or complicated social features.

A focused product could start with groups, shared events, expenses and notifications.

That is enough to learn whether the core behaviour is useful.

What belongs in an MVP?

A useful MVP normally contains:

  1. The primary user journey.
  2. The minimum account system required.
  3. The data model needed for that journey.
  4. Essential notifications.
  5. Basic analytics.
  6. A way to collect feedback.

Everything else should be questioned.

Design before development

Figma is particularly useful for MVPs because you can test the flow before paying to build it.

At AgüíTech, we design the screens first, agree the scope and then develop the product.

This reduces expensive changes later.

How much does an MVP cost?

There is no universal MVP price.

A focused business MVP can be significantly cheaper than a mature product with multiple roles, payments, complex integrations and advanced administration.

The best way to control cost is to control scope.

Build, measure, learn

Once the MVP launches, measure behaviour.

Which screens are used? Where do users stop? Which feature brings people back? What do they ask for?

Those answers should determine version two.
